Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts (MHCA) will host the 11th annual Paint Annapolis outdoor painting competition featuring nearly 100 artists from June 7-9 on the streets of historic Annapolis. The resulting paintings will be exhibited at Maryland Hall in several exhibitions from June 10 through July 15. Click here for Dueling Brushes registration information.

Thirty of the nation’s finest plein air painters have been selected to paint throughout Annapolis for three days and will submit two pieces of two-dimensional art for the Paint Annapolis 2012 Juried Competition and Exhibition. Prizes for the juried work will be announced at a free public reception on Sunday, June 10 at Maryland Hall; the reception will take place from 3-5 pm with prizes awarded at 4:30 pm.
Mark Karnes is the participant juror for Paint Annapolis 2012, responsible for selecting the artists to participate in the competition. Karnes received his MFA in painting from Yale University in 1972 and his BFA in painting from Philadelphia College of Art. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Maryland State Arts Council as well as a Fulbright-Hayes grant for study in Florence, Italy. His work has been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally and can be found in numerous private and museum collections, including the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art. Karnes lives in Baltimore, MD, where he has taught drawing and painting at Maryland Institute College of Art since 1974.
Louis Escobedo is the event juror, who will award the prizes for the Paint Annapolis 2012 competition. Texas-born, Louis Escobedo has been painting since he was six. He won a small art award in school, and has been pursuing his life¹s calling ever since. He holds a BFA from Sam Houston University and is based on the Eastern shore of Maryland. Escobedo’s paintings have received numerous awards, including "Best of Show" and the "Landscape Award" from The Oil Painters of America, a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators in New York and the Top 100 in the National Arts for the Parks. His works have been exhibited at the Hermitage Museum in Norfolk, Virginia, the Colorado History Museum, the Denver Art Museum, and the Phippen Museum among others. Karnes and Escobedo will present a free joint lecture on Sunday, June 10 from 2-3 pm at Maryland Hall in room 308.
Plein air painters of all skill levels are invited to set up their equipment and paint alongside the official competing artists throughout the city from Thursday, June 7 through Saturday, June 9. ”A Paint Annapolis information booth will be located at Annapolis’ Market Square with maps of the official areas of the city where artists will be working. The public is invited to stroll the city and observe the creative process during this event which encourages and supports the development of representational outdoor artists. Students from local middle and high schools will also be painting during the Paint Annapolis event (details to be announced).
Plein air artists of all skill levels are invited to participate in Dueling Brushes, a quick draw event where artists paint within a short time frame. Dueling Brushes will take place on Saturday, June 9 from 9 am to noon. Judging of these works will begin at noon at Susan Campbell Park near the City Dock.
Paint Annapolis 2011 Schedule of Activities
June 7 – 9: Artists paint. Competitive work by juried artists must be done on these days. Students and non-juried artists may create work during this same time period.
Saturday, June 9, 9 am – noon: Dueling Brushes “quick draw” competition, open to juried and non‐juried artists.
Sunday, June 10: 2 pm: Jurors’ lecture, MHCA, Room 308
Sunday, June 10: 3-5 pm: Public reception; awards ceremony at 4:30 pm.
June 10 – July 15: Exhibits on display. Chaney and Martino Galleries: Paint Annapolis 2012 Juried Exhibitions. Second Floor Hallway Gallery: Paint Annapolis High School and Middle School Student Exhibit. Café/Alcove Gallery (first floor): Paint Annapolis Non-Juried Artist Exhibit.
